Naminori and Yomitanchu...
Yeah, I've been seeing a little backlash from the prone surfer side. I surfed this past Sunday with a Pacifica local who SUPs big waves like Mav's who told me that certain breaks are instituting measures because of the SUP explosion. He told me down at Doheny the lifeguards consider SUPs "boats" and therefore certain sections are off limits. He also told me of similar measures at Old Man's. I have not seen the same up here in NorCal yet, which is good. I think the SUP community is a lot smaller up here though.
I was fearing that maybe there would be some negative response here. SUP is just another board in my quiver. I remember a lot of flat and small days in Okinawa (especially at Sunabe and Ie Jima) and I figured a SUP would be fun for those days when you don't feel like chasing the surf or organizing a boat trip to outside reefs.
Enough on that. I feel like I'm such on the defensive. All I can say is give it a try sometime and see what you think. It takes some skill to surf it and it helps to have a foundation from surfing other boards. My personal opinion is that no beginners should SUP, but unfortunately that's not the case. I feel your pain though and it will help me be more cognizant of others in the line up. Thanks for posting responses. Let me know if you're ever in town my way and we'll do a sesh if you don't know anyone in the area. I'll even surf a different board.

: I lived on Ie Jima and in Chatan-Cho
: from 2000-2003. I surfed Junkyards
: most of the time, but I managed to
: fit in a few sessions at Ikei, Ie
: Jima, Suicides, and even Buma's
: before the overpass was built. I
: moved back to SoCal in 2004 and was
: glad to be home surfing my local

: and surf Lindamar mostly. Since
: moving back to the US I've started
: Stand up Paddle surfing and I'm just
: curious if some of you SUP in
: Okinawa. I hope one day I can come
: back because I miss the scene you
