I think one of the many reasons that the N- is a great place is the characters you meet out there, human or animal. A weeks time is really barely enough to even begin to get to know the critters and the crew, but there is always such a flood of activity going on our there it’s impossible to come away without a mountain of vivid memories.
My first night in the cabin, having never been to NM before, much less out in the Southwest countryside, and at around 3:00am I found myself having to answer the call of nature. I don’t care what anyone says, there is something really nice about standing in the freezing cold night air taking a wiz with nothing on but a pair of boxers and a T-shirt, almost completely black aside from the stars. The quiet N- air with not even a breeze to break the silence…
Then the crunch of those heavy plodding footsteps slowly and steadily coming up behind me from the fenceline!!
I turned around and de-puckered myself and found Jack taking a break from his nightly rounds coming over to say hi and receive some petting. That awesome dog spent a few minutes coming into the cabin and checking to make sure everything was looking good in there too, making sure my wife wasn’t sleeping TOO soundly to give his ears a scratch, before moving on down the fenceline.
Roping practice outside the cookhouse, Nate giving me a lesson on roping and suddenly Jack comes to life, barking and throwing rocks with his mouth, digging and carrying on. Preston explained; “Every time Jack sees the rope come out he knows it’s almost time to start eating balls.” Those of you who have been there knows what he means.
It’s no fun to lose an old buddy like that, he certainly did his part on making an impression on me.
