Well I've waded through the Defenders' website to find the wolf areas. Interesting that their annual reporting on the Gila project is so behind date. Looks like they have a special vendetta, er, I mean, mission to that New Mexico high country, zeroing in on you all apparently and making it a different world there now than the one I knew when it was mere rumor this would come down. I wanted to comment on something I came across last summer in the help-wanted ads online in Western Livestock Journal. Horseback riders were being looked for to keep patrol among cattle herds in the Madison Valley in Montana, not so much to protect the wolves there (as Defenders folks obviously are centered) but more to see that the ranches survived. They were looking for people to bring their own horse and come camp for the summer in those wilds--a reverse telephone search on the Internet identified "Predator Conservation Alliance" (www.predatorconservation.org), and if you go to their website they've got some write-ups on "Range Rider" programs. Now that could all be propaganda, and just another foot in the door to destabilize ranching, but I've read other things about the organization's program and it seems to be directed towards actual "cowhands" and not the sort of environmentalists with a New Age religionist bent. I wonder if they'd hire, and pay, range riders sympathetic to the N Bar's existence to come do what's been done in the Madison Valley and so be a counter-weight to the Defenders, i.e., take Preston's place for a while so he can tend to other things he can't any more. Might want to call Janelle Holden there, (406) 587-3389. Ask her if she'd hire someone who's gone past the Big 5-0, LOL. Woody
