Posted by christine Dear Mimi, A person could write a whole book in response to your question :) Benedictines are about balance "work and prayer" is their motto. So if you find a tradtional monestary the day will be pretty well balanced between the two. I have not found it to be quite so balanced in the more "modern" orders, but that's just my opinion. Trappist or Cistern sisters and monks also follow the rule of St. Benedict. You can generally find this rule printed in book form at larger books stores or on Amazon. Carmelites have their foundation in the traditions of the hermits of Mt. Carmel, therefore, in a tradition Carmelite convent you will have silence, work and prayer. Often any work that can be done alone in the cell is and they often have hermatiges were individual sisters can spend time alone. Some of their St.s are St. Therese, St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila, to name a few. Franciscians are based on St. Francis and St. Clare so the cloistered nuns sometimes go barefoot or wear sandals (so do the carmelites) and have a special love for "lady poverty". The active orders are often involved in ecological concerns and sometimes teach. Dominicans find their beginnings with St. Dominic to whom Our Lady first entrusted the rosary. They are also called the order of preachers and that's what they do. The active sisters teach alot of the time and the cloistered sisters study and pray and often have perpetual rosary and adoration. You can recognize them by their white habits. There is also the Passionist order, who were founded by St. Paul of the Cross and they are especially devoted to the Passion of Christ and teaching others about it. They have cloistered sisters as well as active. I think that covers all the major basics, but there are so many different kinds and new ones keep forming. I would just search the net. Type in catholic nun vocation and you will get bunches :) Yours in the saving love of Christ, Christine
