I am getting married in Sept. 2002 in a Catholic ceremony. Our bishop recently banned the lighting of the unity candle from the service. He cited that this practice is "pagan" and doens't belong. Yet so many times in the litergy and the wordings of the ceremony itself, the statement of two become one is the most common theme. The lighting of the unity candle has always symbolized this to me and my fiancee. Is this practice really pagan in origin? Please help.
