Posted by Moderator Dear Jennie; It so happens that someone else asked a question about outdoor weddings earlier on this message board. Here is the reply I gave them: "The Church wants Nuptial Masses to take place within the Sanctuary, before the Blessed Sacrament. It's not a slight against nature, but the church building is the house of God, where Christ is present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, where Masses usually take place and where the People of God gather as a family. It is most fitting that the Sacrament of Matrimony occur in the house of God, in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and in the context of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. "Outdoor weddings are also subject to the whims of "mother nature". My best friend got married in a garden (she is Lutheran); it was a lovely ceremony, as most weddings are, and the weather was perfect. Later that same year I got married in a church building, and I'm glad I did so because it RAINED that day! Imagine if I had had an outdoor wedding like hers (there was no canopy or anything at her wedding, so it's a good thing the weather was good.)" A final thought: Even if the wedding itself is not held outdoors, one could perhaps have an outdoor photo shoot and/or reception afterwards . . . weather permitting, of course! God be with you both.
