Mother Church never told you that because it is not true!
Unfortunately, nowadays one cannot always rely on what a priest says. Many seminaries give them a substandard education, saturated with Modernism rather than authentic Catholic teaching. If you heard this from a priest, he was misinformed, and he unwittingly passed the misinformation on to you.
I am curious as to whether you actually read my web site before posting your question, since I answer the "Marian Devotion is Pagan" charge on the following page:

P.S.: My husband finds it difficult to believe that any priest, even a liberal, would say something like that. He would like you to give the priest's name and his parish (including city and state) to corroborate your claim. If you provide us that info we may even be able contact your priest and gently correct his errors, since he deserves to know the truth as much as you do!
