This may not be new info to devout Catholics but it sure was a revelation to me. One of the criticisms of Catholicism is that man(priests) do not have the power to forgive sins-only God does. This was presented to me by a Baptist friend and I offered up John 20:19-23. Not only does Christ charge the apostles with the specific act of forgiving sins-but he makes a specific point to breathe the Holy Spirit into them so that they are empowered to do so! When I presented this to my friend she was basically speechless. I consider her very knowledgeable about the Bible but she had never read that passage in the sense I presented it. I continued on and said that Christ would NEVER give his apostles a power and not expect it to pass them on. To do so would eventually spell the end of the church. She still isn't sold on other ideas about Catholicism-yet-but I'm working on it!
