Gesu' e Maria come compagni di viaggio by Henri J.M. Nouwen...concluding words of this morning homily were Sant'Angela dying on the cross last words expressing all the wonder at the greatest miracle the Verbum made flesh...words...early morning reading the paper so much evil in the world so many miracles too...a kindergarden teacher saved some children from a potentially deadly accident when the driver had a heart attack and she pulled the break warned by the driver himself who realising what was happening had taken away the foot from the accelerator...so much good done by people moved by God love for the others and respect of his Commandments of love and so much evil which if you stop and reflect on the event you realise are always rooted in the non obeyance to one of them...so feelings...what do you do? do you stop and pray and pray and pray uncessantly...so much to pray for... or do you somehow do something? You really want to do something but then you feel so small and feel you don't know enough so on your way to take the daily Nourishment you stop in a bookshop specialised in religious material and you are overwhelmed by the growth of words that sprang from the Word...you feel confused you don't know where to turn then of all that you saw you leave the place with one small booklet "Gesu e Maria come compagni di viaggio". On the covering a coptic image representing Mary and Jesus at the Cana Wedding just before the first miracle...in His eyes fear and uncertainty and in hers faith and confidence as she encouraingly watches over Him - hands joined I imagine in prayer...thoughts go to yourself and you feel encouraged by the presence of such companions...the thought of Mary who without even the aid of the Gospels - after growing Him in herself she accompanied the growing Verbum and...and you think that what 'fuelled' her was faith -- faith in the love of the Lord as the priest was saying today, a God given faith that must have been so strong before -- hers was such a full yes... and then reading through your own confused train of feelings you realise that really you should pray for Mary's faith asking the Lord to illumine you on YOUR path the path He entrusted you with...and a final picture comes to the mind all that hunger and thirst for knowledge of God that you feel eager to satisfy reading all those books - and they are such a small percentage of all that has and will be written - is unexpectedly fullfilled by the sight in church of an aged priest praying kneeling down holding on to his stick and...and the words that convinced you to get that particular book on how one of the most important re-discoveries in his life as a priest was the need to TALK not about but TO Jesus...to walk into the heart of God which is also the heart of the world through Him.
