Thought about your problem and also on the basis of a
scientific programme I saw about it I feel like I can
give you the following suggestions. 1. Don't make it
into an obsession - I mean it is a sin and you must
free yourself as soon as possible but don't put too
much pressure on yourself. It takes time. 2. you are
aware of it - let your priest and God know that you
are actively working on it - for the sake of the
latter's soul do not provide unnecessary details.3
evidently you have a very vivid imagination - best
move in wrestling? using your opponent's strenght to
reverse positions - in this case make imagination your
tool and 4. treat it like movie stuff: prepare
yourself a set of mental cassettes and be ready to
play them when necessary - when those nasty images
appear push stop - it's in your amigdala (back of the
brain neck side) and play something else instead 5.
play what? my suggestion is to imagine a certain
person - especially if certain thoughts involve a
specific person - and try like a film director to put
in as many details as possible about the scene
[dialogues included] so as to occupy your brain and
redirect energies. Very importantly - can tell you
this from personal experience - do what you are
probably tempted to avoid in other words making that
situation as realistic and likely to happen as
possible. If you are really fond of that person and
you know your real self (the problem is there no doubt
but making such an open call for help clearly shows
your deep down determined intention to fight it) be
sure that you can trust yourself. You would never ever
touch that person for real. I can guarantee you it
works. Images will keep popping up but the
countereffect is strong and immediate. And never
forget to work on your breathing in the process - deep
and slow. God bless! You'll make it!
: Hello all,
:
: I don't know how to begin this post,
: so please bear with me. I am a
: 22-year-old woman who has been
: Catholic all her life. I'd like to
: believe that I am an individual who
: takes her faith very seriously. I
: have a very, very severe problem
: with scrupulosity and confession.
: So severe, in fact, that it brings
: suicidal thoughts to mind (though I
: have no intention of acting on
: them). Basically, my scruples
: revolve around matters of sex and
: impure actions. Basically, I cannot
: tell when I am sinning sexually and
: when I am not. I invent sexual sins
: (very obscure, but true). I think I
: do these things out of
: compulsiveness and obsession. When
: preparing for confession, I often go
: to great lengths to figure out
: exactly how I should confess these
: doubtful sins, and spend less time
: thinking about the clear and certain
: ones. Then, I worry that I wasn't
: specific enough with regards to
: these doubts (i.e. I feel as if I
: don't go into extreme and graphic
: detail, then my confession is
: invalid). In the past, I was unsure
: about the various guidelines for
: specificity in confession, and hence
: acted in doubt. I am so extremely
: concerned about misrepresenting
: doubtful sins in past confessions.
:
: I really, really need some insight
: here. Am extremely sinful or
: extremely sick? Should I reconfess
: all the doubts and go into graphic
: detail about them? Do I have to
: tell the priest I have a problem
: with scrupulosity (yet again), or is
: this not necessary. I have begun
: seriously thinking about getting
: psychological help, but don't know
: where to find a Catholic
: psychologist. Please advise me.
: I'm losing my mind.
