It seems there are quite a few guys who want to get their wives to start smoking. Some, like Beach Bum and me, have had some limited success in that our wives did come to smoke the occasional cigarette. But I do know a couple here in town where a non-smoking wife became a fairly heavy regular smoker primarily to please her husband. I had mentioned her in passing to BB and he suggested people on this board might be interested in their story (what I know of it).
First some background. My wife Sandra and I went out to eat at a Peruvian restaurant back in January, sitting out on the balcony where we could smoke. It was in fact one of the first times my wife ever smoked in public (previously she had mostly smoked at her best friend's house).
We happened to run into Gelin, a woman my wife had worked with briefly a few years ago. Gelin was there with her husband and two other couples, all of whom looked to be a bit younger than us (late 30ís). I noticed that after they had finished eating, both of the other women pulled out packs of cigarettes, offering one to Gelin while they were at it. What caught my attention was that none of their husbands smoked, but didnít seem to mind that their wives did. My curiosity was further sparked when I also noticed that the cuter one of Gelinís two friends didnít seem to be all that experienced a smoker, despite the fact that she was carrying her own pack. After the men had headed inside to watch the end of a soccer game on the TV above the bar, my wife went over and sat at their table for a few minutes catching up with Gelin. She even smoked a cigarette with the other women, despite just having finished one with me at our table (another first for her).
It turns out that the three women had been classmates back in high school. They reconnected a couple of years ago and started getting together for happy hour drinks after work about once a week, as well as an occasional womenís night out. They invited Sandra to join them, which my wife did several times over the next few months. Sandra and I have also gotten together with Gelin and her husband on several occasions. Gelin turned out to be one of those people who never smokes at home, at work, or in front of her kids, but can easily go through half a dozen cigarettes during a night out on the town.
Of course I was also curious about the other two women, particularly Ana, the one who had seemed like a relatively inexperienced smoker back in January. Sandra did eventually tell me Anaís story; which the other women had told her in great detail after my wife admitted that I seemed to want her to smoke more. I guess they were wondering if I might be like Anaís husband. This is basically what my wife later passed on to me:
Ana's entire smoking experience up to last year were a few puffs that Luisa (the 3rd women) had pressured her into back in high school. But after she started hanging out much more with her old friends, she couldnít help but notice the way they seemed to enjoy smoking during their happy hours and finally got curious enough to try one. Still not getting it, she relented and tried another some days later while having coffee with Luisa in her kitchen.
Anaís husband came home early and caught her red handed. She was astonished when he didnít even mention the fact that she was smoking. But I guess later that evening he came right out and told her that he wouldnít mind at all if she wanted to start. They had only been married for a couple of years and Ana hadnít known that he liked women who smoke, let alone that one of the things that had hastened the end of his previous marriage was when his ex quit smoking.
Ana was kind of taken aback by this initially, not sure what to make of it, particularly since her husband didnít smoke himself. But though she fended off her husbandís attempts to bring up the subject again, she did continue accepting cigarettes from her friends while debating endlessly with them whether she should give in to her husbandís wishes. Eventually her friends helped sway her and last Christmas she told her husband she was going to start smoking. She did this by wrapping a carton of cigarettes as a gift to him, which reportedly confused the guy until she clarified that her present was that she was promising to smoke them all.
Sandra admits that Ana remains quite happy with her decision, as she reports that her husband has never been as attentive to her as he has since she started smoking. She even joked that she now has a drawer full of cigarettes as it seems he keeps buying packs for her far beyond what she could possibly smoke. Not that she doesn't seem to be doing her best to try, given that in just a few short months Ana had already become a much heavier smoker than even Luisa.
Sandra told me most of this back in April, after she pinned me down and I finally admitted my smoking fetish to her. She told it to me both to explain why the idea of a husband getting off on his wifeís smoking wasnít a completely new concept to her, but more importantly to warn me that I shouldnít expect her to follow Anaís example. I could tell that Sandra thinks her new friend was being foolish, even though my wife also admits that Ana insists she loves smoking for itself and wishes she had started years ago. I had to rush to reassure Sandra that I really didnít want her to become a heavy smoker (which is true, as far as it goes).
Of course I do wonder if Ana is still quite so happy about her decision to start smoking, given how difficult things have become for smokers around here with the new smoking law that went into effect a couple of months ago. Her timing really couldnít have been worse. But the women have made some adjustments. No longer able to smoke at their favorite happy hour spot, they have recently decided to sometimes meet at Anaís house after work, taking advantage of the fact that sheís the only one without kids. Now that my wife plans on joining them again (which also means sheís likely to smoke with them again), I can always hope that Ana will eventually rub off on her - though I'd prefer my wife smoke more like a carton a month, rather than Ana's carton a week. Not that either is very likely.
Even if my wife doesnít end up smoking regularly, running into Gelin and her friends turned out to be a real stroke of luck. I doubt my wife would be smoking as little as she does now if not for them. Consider that Sandra literally only knows one other woman from among all her many work and social acquaintances who is still an unrepentant regular daily smoker (the friend who got her to first try cigarettes).
