I do find it interesting that I haven't heard news of many colleges in Illinois adopting tobacco-free campus rules(other than a few exceptions, such as Wheaton College), at least as of right now. I do worry that since CCC passed such a rule, that the public and private 4 year colleges in IL(and also other 2 year community colleges that've yet to ban smoking everywhere on their campus) might start to feel pressure to selfishly ban smoking throughout their campus. Hopefully it doesn't come to that for years(and if ever), but we'll see. It's bad enough that I'm starting to fear that a $1 cigarette tax increase might pass in Illinois finally(after several attempts), despite all those who are against it and have written letters opposing such a move. And if it does pass, I'm sure all of us against the increase will greatly laugh, as revenue that would've gone to IL state government otherwise no longer occurs....

: I was disturbed, when I heard the news that
: University of Florida(Gainesville) went
: tobacco-free about only a year ago. And even
: more recently, I heard a rumor that some in
: the administration at Florida Atlantic
: University(which already limited smoking to
: designated outdoor areas only, a la USF)
: were open to the idea of a total campus
: smoking ban, so my fear is that if more
: colleges adopt total bans, there might be a
: push for a statewide law prohibiting smoking
: on any college campus. Such as
: what(unfortunately) Iowa and Arkansas(though
: I think AR's law only applies to both 2 and
: 4 year public colleges) have done. It's bad
: enough that I heard(and since I used to
: briefly attend classes there, as well!) that
: City Colleges of Chicago(CCC) passed a
: tobacco-free campus rule for all their
: campuses, but since I haven't visited any of
: them since that rule started, I can't report
: on how it's going. I imagine it's probably
: very heavily ignored, though. I noticed
: enough disobedience occurred, when CCC
: enacted a partial campus smoking ban outside
: of certain entrances at all of their
: campuses in 2005.

: I think here in Florida there would be a lot
: of upset people if they tried to do a total
: bar smoking ban but I could be wrong.
: Recently they did Limit The University of
: South Florida to only smoking in designated
: outdoor areas, but there are about 30 of
: them around campus and they are pretty easy
: to find. I wonder how well it is working out
: over there.
