Alex,
Vaping is smoking an e-cigarette. If your friend tried one and you didn't see any vapor (smoke) on his or her exhales, it might have been an e-cigarette of very poor quality. There are many different styles and brands of e-cigarettes available and with the ones that I use, I usually get just about the same amount of smoke that I get from a puff of a cigarette.
