Black Bear is a great race. I think you have to look at both distances when deciding about the bike. The Sprint bike course is more rolling. You just have to keep your momentum, pedal hard, and get over the hills. It's a tough course, yes, but there are sections which are fast.
The Half Ironman bike course is different. There are some longer gradual hills in there. So you can't get too excited when you hit those and really just try to spin up them.
The Sprint run course is cool. There's one really hard section and then the last mile or so is flat.
The Half Ironman run course is hard because it's on trail and it makes it slower.
It seems alot of people when contemplating Black Bear talk about the bike course. But if biking is your weakness then it's probably a good race to do so when you train for it you ride hilly terrain, ride more, and you will get better at biking. Same for if biking is your strength.
