What's more, he probably had decent intuition about theory, given the melodies he sang over the chords. So citing Lennon might actually weaken your point. Then there's the argument that, had Lennon known theory better, he would have made better music. If you are a musician, and a person who loves music, don't you want to know why you love it and what makes it work? Theory answers those questions. It's going to be tough to write a paper about not needing theory to make good music if you don't know theory in the first place. You will struggle to prove your point. You might end up simply using an economic comparison, as in: Paul McCartney doesn't read music, but he has made over $1 billion in music. That's more than the total income of every great composer who ever lived combined (excepting some film composers like John Williams and Danny Elfman). In a capitalistic society, the true measure of success is financial wealth.
