Music Theory help!

I'm writing this research paper on music theory and my arguement is that "You don't need Music Theory in order to compose good songs" (you can tell how much i don't like music theory now..) for example, John lennon didn't know Music Theory but he was borned gifted with composing hit songs, so can anyone help me with this topic? like giving me artists who did not know music theory and sources where i can find more information on this topic. thank you all!!
