Thanks, 02. The half rest between two quarters is not acceptable for RCM Theory exams, so I was trying to come up with some justification for their position -- and finding it difficult, because, as you point out, it's perfectly acceptable to write notes that way.
It's not just a matter of quantity (the silence), but to show the internal divisions of the bar, whether they're sounded or not. Otherwise a fast reader might get mixed up, seeing a halfrest, which implies a unit, a monad, and indivisible thing. This is all very philosophical.
