Another question from one of my students: suppose you have a bar of 4/4 time with one quarter note at the beginning and another at the end. I've explained that you cannot fill in the missing beats with a half rest, you must use two quarter rests, because the weak beat (2) cannot "pick up" the medium beat (beat 3). Someone wanted to know why it mattered, since it was silence we were talking about, and the silence couldn't be either strong, medium, or weak. Is it just a convention, or is there a reason I can pass on?
