hello all. i am trying to learn music theory and have got stuck at the very start. im looking at "THE AB GUIDE TO MUSIC THEORY PART 1" in the section of Time Signatures. basically i comprehend that the top number tells you how many beats there are per bar. however, the bottom number is confusing me. it says here that the bottom number tells you what KIND of note is to be used to represent the beat. so if the bottom number is 4 then the beats will be shown as CROTCHETS. however, in an example illustration there is a 3/2 time signature.3 being the top number and 2 the bottom. and in the first bar i see a SEMIBREVE and a MINIM.this doesnt make sense to me as i am expecting to see 3 notes and each one being MINIM in kind. the 2nd bar has 3 MINIMS ( which is what i expected to see). the third bar has one CROTCHET, two QUAVERS, and then four CROTCHETS. and finally in the last bar there are three MINIMS like in the 2nd bar.
