I'll answer the second part of your question, Alex. The chromatic scale is a scale composed of semitones. (If you're playing it on the piano, you use every key, both white and black). Traditionally it is written with sharps when ascending and with flats when descending (this just means you don't have to use natural signs all the time.)
Descending: C, B, Bb, A, Ab, G, Gb, F, E, Eb, D, Db, C
