Matrix????

Hey, is there anyone out there who can explain the concept of using a matrix? It's completely over my head. I mean, what do I know about prime form and which number is applied to which letter? (i.e., A=0, F-sharp=9) If anyone knows how to put this in simple, comprehendable terms, I'd really appreciate it. I have to test out of Theory 4 at the end of the semester so I can take Counterpoint.
