Hi, thanks so much for your reply!
I screwed up on the note naming there, of course you're right that D is the 7 and F is the 9 (doh!). The book in question is 'Harmony in Practice' by Anna Butterworth, and this is exercise 170, an extract from Walton's film music for Henry V. You seem to share my confusion about the triad itself being minor and not diminished.
I see my theory teacher next week so will ask her opinion too.
I'm in the UK, and the book is from a British author. Maybe you're right about the terminology point.
