I'm curious -- has anybody developed music theory or a system of music notation based on half-tones?
For example, with r standing for any root or starting note, (r, 4, 3) would be the three notes of a major triad -- the second note being four half-tones above r, and the third note being 3 half-tones above the second note.
Another notation for the major triad could be (r, 4, 7), where now each note is described as its distance above r in half-tones.
In either case we understand the pitches to be getting higher as we read from left to right.
Using the "distance from root" idea for every note, (r, 3, 6) would be the diminished triad and (r, 4, 7, 9) would be the major 6th chord.
This might lead to the following notation, or something like it, for an "open" major triad: (r, 7, s+4), where s is understood to be r+12, the octave above r -- for example, C, G, E, where we understand the pitches to be ascending.
My basic question is: Has anyone developed this idea into an extensive system? If so, I would be grateful for references.
