Does anyone know the "rules" for how to draw chords when there is an interval of a 2nd involved? I'm talking about the placement of the note heads themselves--which notes to stack in a column, and which to shift to the right or left.
I'm looking in a theory book at some inverted tertian 7th chords in close position, for example:
F# A C# E in first inversion...
The A, C#, and F# notes are stacked in a column, and the E (the 7th) note head is shifted to the left.
C# E G# B in first inversion...
The E, G#, and B notes are stacked in a column, and the C# (the root) note head is shifted to the right.
F A C Eb in second inversion...
The C, F, and A notes are stacked in a column, and the Eb (the 7th) note head is shifted to the left.
F A C Eb in third inversion...
The F, A, and C notes are stacked in a column, and the Eb (the 7th) note head is shifted to the left.
G B D F in third inversion...
The F, B, and D notes are stacked in a column, and the G (the root) note head is shifted to the right.
It seems like it's always the root or the 7th that's shifted, but how do you decide which one, and to the left or the right? Does it depend on the inversion? Does the clef make a difference?
Many thanks!
