Ok, so as you can tell from the subject of my post I am a senior in high school and I'm preparing for my freshman year in college. I am going to be a voice performance major with an emphasis in opera performance, and I just had a few questions. Most of these questions will probably seem nieve and stupid compared to the knowledge of everyone on this site, yet, I still need to ask them.
1. When looking at key signature you see three flats and you automatically know that your key is Eb major or A minor (correct? I'm not positive but I'm trying here). Well how exactly do you know, by looking at the key signature, that you are in major in minor. I have had teachers tell me that it all depends on how it sounds (ex. Happy-Major, Sad-Minor) but you can't always go by that especially when you have never heard the piece of music before. My private voice teacher has been helping me alot with this and she recently introduced me to the circle of 5ths so I've really been studying it alot. So how exactly do you know that you're in Eb major...why can't it be Eb minor?
2. What are the different scales (harmonic, etc.) and what is the difference between them?
Well that's really all the questions I have...please reply soon and if you would like you may also email me. Thanks!
