Posted by Tom Krajci I have a question about double flats and diminished chords in keys with lots of flats...specifically C-flat (7 flats!). To start with, the C diminished 7 chord is: C E-flat G-flat B-double flat (That's typical of any 7 chord spelling...1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th tones of the scale.) (Am I right...so far?) The C-flat major triad is: C-flat E-flat G-flat. So far so good. I'm studying piano and trying to get some scale/interval theory in my head.
I can do that for all other diminished 7 chords...except one: C-flat diminished 7.
C-flat is a valid/legal key (ok, 7 flats, a bear to read/play, but it's valid...yes?)
But C-flat diminished 7 is:..... C-flat E-double flat G-double-flat ...... and B triple?-flat? that's not right to have a triple flat.
What am I doing wrong? Where do I miss the boat?
