
Posted by 02 E.g., The 8 represents 8 eighth notes in the figure (1 half plus dotted quarter plus 1 eighth). This figure takes place in the time of one half note plus one dotted eighth note on a metronome. Babbitt did stuff like this on a synthesizer that he programed (sequenced), and he played the rhythms electronically for players because this notation is so opaque. Once it's in the ear, it can be played much better. These days, there are people like Steven Schick at UC San Diego who take the time to work out rhythms like this to perfection. He's known to have taken percussion music by Brian Ferneyhough and performed it exactly as written, and that music is more complex than this.

In other words, the number represents how many notes (eights, quarters, etc.) are in the bracket, the = sign translates to "in the time of" and the notes on the right of the = sign are the metrical relationship, or the amount of time in the meter that the bracketed figure will occupy.
