It's not for better tone; it's for keeping track of where your fingers are in the beat. One problem I haven't solved is the repeating octaves in Schubert's Erlkonig. There's no alternting here. One has to simply play the repeating notes as fast as possible without tightening the wrist. I can't do it. Yet.

I use the same finger almost always. Although I am not a piano pedagogue, I have played for over 30 years, and I let comfort, ease, and sound dictate decisions like that. The fingerings you cite are usually the ones published (alternating between 1 and 2), but I find that annoying when I can do the exact same thing with one finger.
