You're exactly right. A famous example of this exact situation is Chopin's "Raindrop" prelude. Begins in D flat major, modulates to C sharp minor, then returns to the D flat major for the end. I highly recommend listening to this piece, and if you play the piano, learning it. It's not too difficult to play and it's a fantastic piece of music.
