
Posted by 02 Basic "theory" at the beginner's level seems to be primarily notation, and that's what you get in the "theory" books included in many piano instruction series. Usually, there is something in those books about the scale, which is the basic building block for tonal theory, but that's about it.

My favorite theory book for teaching is by Greg Steinke. It's titled "Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music" and you can get it at some university libraries. It is in two volumes and costs about $85 per volume, so I recommend the library. Also very good is the theory book by Bruce Benward, which I believe is titled "Harmony." It's also a college-level textbook, but it is very clear and thorough (it also has two volumes). I'd steer away from Ottman, another popular book; it's not as clear as the two I mentioned.
