Posted by Doug I have been a musician since 1988. In college I minored in music technology. But, one thing I was never taught and that I have been trying to learn myself for about 5 years now is THEORY. Understanding pop music theory is getting clearer to me as I keep reading books on the subject. (How to Write Songs on Guitar by Rikky Rooksby is pretty much the best and only book that got through to me on songwriting, as I am mainly a piano player) I have done a few minor projects like scoring a short film and an animation and a commercial. However, I do this with little theory and mostly coposing by ear and with a few pop music tricks I know. However, recently I have taken a volunteer project to write the main theme for an independently produced video game. I hope to make it as goods as I can (Like Matt Uelman's Diablo II score for Blizzard Entertainment) of course, I will be taking a more electronic approach since I won't have an orchestra. But I know, like Vangelis and his Bladerunner score, even if it is electronic the same arrangement rules apply as a real orchestra. Couuld anyone please point me to the right books or literature so I can start learning the THEORY behind orchestral scoring for film and electronic media? Also, if anyone could suggest thier favorite keys, and chord progressions. Thanks all
