Alternatively, THE BRASHER DOUBLOON can be a jumping-off point for noir aficionados in order to track one of the notable bit players in the American variant of our favored genre: the one and only Houseley Stevenson, who appears as doomed coin expert/fence Elisha Morningstar. Stevenson is of course best known as the plastic surgeon in the Bogart-Bacall noir DARK PASSAGE, but he had a good run in noir over the last years of his life (he passed away in 1953): Somewhere in the Night (1946) Not quite Tito Vuolo, of course, but pretty respectable for someone whose first appearance in noir didn't happen until he was 67 years old!
Lightweight Chandler is still worth seventy-one minutes of your time; it's been more than ten years since this one has been screened in a theater, and it's time for someone to do a full-on Chandler series, which could get pretty extensive (which means that, in the current repertory climate, it ain't gonna happen).
