After a long festival run, MAMI WATA gets a limited release in American theaters today--Marc Zoller Seitz suggests that this B&W film from Benin is channeling film noir and the post-modern surrealist arthouse tradition that claims directors such as Lynch and Jodorwowksy. A seaside village, a populace still in thrall of omens, and a "rebel" character washed to shore from the sea set the stage for a film that also recalls the work of Mexican director Emilio Fernandez and his fabled photographer Gabriel Figueroa.
