As a studio contract player, King usually was relegated to supporting roles. Occasionally, she would be given better parts ("Shadow of a Woman," and "Dial 1119" come to mind), but she never managed to become a leading lady cast in major productions. Arguably, her most famous role was as "Lillian Russell" in "My Wild Irish Rose," but, once again, that was a supporting part as the celebrity "other woman." Arlene Dahl played the leading female role. King was also cast in the fine film noir "The Man I Love," as the supportive sister of Ida Lupino.
Eddie Muller exited the theater after three days, including the exhausting Saturday and Sunday marathons with multiple screenings of up to five or six features per day. When I was a few years younger, I could manage to attend all of the scheduled films. Now, it is a bit much as the theater seats are not the most comfortable.
In addition to Muller making introductions, I was able to listen to him answer questions about Barbara Stanwyck (following "Sorry, Wrong Number") during a break before "Southside 1-1000" began.
Alan K. Rode will host the remainder of the festival program which concludes on Thursday.
