The biggest film audience in the world is in China, which has strict censorship rules. While other countries go ahead and make their films exploring edgy subject matter, the American studios are attuned to their large Chinese audience. Don’t expect much that is daring in pushing the envelope into adult subject matter. This may be a major reason why Hollywood loves their action figure movies and all the CGI. It’s safe and inoffensive to countries with censorship codes. As for Don’t Look Up, which I watched streaming – while I fully endorse the message they were trying to convey, I thought the film was an over drawn mess, which has split audiences in two. Like, Leo and Meryl what were you thinking? Those who liked it are probably the same who think that SNL is the height of wit. Yes, give me more of Dr. Strangelove, which still holds up after almost 60 years. Pretty much when I want a laugh any more I just go to one of Carlin’s old HBO specials. I agree with Carl, the best stuff to be found is on the tube, with none better than Gomorrah.
