One thing I've never seen anybody mention: Tom Tully plays Edmond O'Brien's "pops" in the film, but if that was the case in real life, Tully would have fathered him at age 7. Tully was born in 1908, O'Brien in 1915, but Tully certainly looked and played older than he actually was at the time the film was made -- just 44.
Was happy to snare this one on the DVR; it looks pretty spectacular, particularly the location settings. I'll get it on blu ray at the point it comes out and what's the point of restoring it if it doesn't? I don't believe Universal has the same rights to 50s Paramount films as the 40s ... so it's probably less likely to turn up on the fast-moving Kino Lorber assembly line. Criterion? Wouldn't surprise me. But you're probably right about the best remaining noir film not available digitally.
