I hadn't seen Cutter's Way in awhile but re-watched the other night on The Criterion Channel. I had forgotten just how incredible the late John Heard's performance was in that film, upstaging poor young Jeff Bridges. Interesting that it was Bridges who wound up becoming such a major star while Heard "languished" as a character actor until his death in 2017.
It dawned on me that Heard played a similar off-the-wall character -- the corrupt, mob-connected and reprobate New Jersey detective Vin Makazian -- in the early episodes of The Sopranos. He was quite good there, too, and I remember being sad that his character committed suicide by jumping off a bridge.
