It's weird to say a production from 2007 is classic, but Forbrydelsen {"The Killing") was, along with Wallander, Borgen and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, one of the pillars of Nordic noir that effectively spawned an entire genre of chilly films and TV series from Scandanavia, oft copied in the UK and America to lesser effect.
The Danish version of The Killing was so good it was denied legal entry in the U.S. on DVD or streaming because AMC didn't want its own English-speaking version set in and around Seattle diminished in any way. Finding it has continued to be a challenge for the last decade-plus, but now it's going to be aired for the first time on the somewhat obscure streaming channel Topic starting Aug. 12. If you've never seen it, it's worth the effort to find Topic if you get it and subscribe, particularly for the 20-episode first season. I have to say I haven't watched the third season myself since the subtitles of my own copies were so bad. Nothing worse than bad Swedish, Danish or Norwegian subs. OK, maybe bad Japanese subs.
Topic also has the first and best season of the original Swedish-Danish production of The Bridge starring Sofia Henin and Kim Bodnia, which had a good run on Hulu but has now disappeared from the major streaming services, although you can buy individual seasons from Amazon.
