Stuart Heisler has a very strange filmography; you'd have to call him "versatile." A solid craftsman, he was offbeat only in his early days as a "B" director with Paramount (the two films you mention); he became noticeably more mainstream once he began free-lancing, but still made several notable films, including STORM WARNING (1951) and THIS IS MY LOVE (1954), the latter being a Chi-Bob favorite.
