Lately I've encountered a spate of truly bad scores, in places. These portions distract and detract from the movie.
What they contain as so-called "music" is a single pitch, wholly or predominantly. This pitch is played monotonously by an instrument, be it drum, or stringed, or electronic. The means makes no difference. The rhythm is eighth notes, at a moderately fast tempo. The effect becomes
The monotonous drumming is not broken by accents or alterations in the length of the notes.
It's a glorious relief when this stops.
This music is of no genre that I know of, not classical, not jazz, not r & b, not folk, not country and western, not rock, not Indian, not Spanish. But being unfamiliar with rock and its descendants, that may perhaps be the origin of these sounds.
To my ears, it's worse than nothing. Silence and natural background sounds would have improved the movie. The sounds being administered are supposed to convey suspense during non-dialog scenes of movement and transition.
One defect at a time.
