Actually, the events surrounding the creation of THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE may have been more prominent in Huston's decision to leave America and Hollywood behind (massive studio meddling in the final cut). Like Kate Hepburn, Huston was never linked to the Communist Party--the two of them were supporters of Henry Wallace. The truncated release of WE WERE STRANGERS may have been a protective gesture by Harry Cohn, who was incensed by the right-wing hatchet job done on the film by the Hollywood Review but also saw the handwriting on the wall and took quick steps to keep the film from become a major cause célèbre.
One of the most bizarre afterlife episodes in the long twilight that enveloped WE WERE STRANGERS is the fact (documented by a Kennedy assassination researcher) that Lee Harvey Oswald watched the film when it was broadcast on a local Dallas TV station in mid-October 1963. For those in the vast Kennedy conspiracy maelstrom in search of psychologically-based "evidence" of Oswald's "lone gunman" status, this viewing (along with, ostensibly, viewings of THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and SUDDENLY!) is seen as a "trigger film," one that somehow spurred him into action. The theory remains just that, but it is indisputable that the film was screened on Dallas TV in mid-October 1963 and we have Marina Oswald's testimony (buried in the voluminous pages of the Warren Report) that she watched the film with him.
