Huston may have avoided the Blacklist by relocating to Europe for a good part of the 1950s and releasing a flag waving version of "The Red Badge of Courage" with Audie Murphy (made in Hollywood before the director's lengthy self-imposed European exile).
I was suitably impressed with "We Were Strangers," but the film's conclusion is naive. After overthrowing one dictator(Machado), which leads to street celebrations, another such corrupt Cuban government (military junta) is close behind, with future dictators (Batista) and the Communists in the distance. Nonetheless, it is still a good movie that ought to be better known.
