Re: Elliot Lavine returns to the Roxie with THE DARK SIDE OF THE DREAM March 23-26
No doubt about the soundness of those films you mention, Bob, but of course OPEN SECRET and FORCE OF EVIL have been shown at the Roxie recently. As for MEET JOHN DOE, it captures something else about what's going on today that makes it relevant to such a series. By playing it after A FACE IN THE CROWD we can actually compare what was possible to get away with in the 50s as opposed to the 40s.
And I will happily confess to pushing for WE WERE STRANGERS for the closer, as it shows a side of John Huston that's been suppressed from memory: once you've seen the film, you'll wonder how he avoided the Blacklist.
Wish you could make it out--great as these film are, they are even greater when seen in a theatre with an audience. It reminds us of what cinema's social function used to be, and still needs to be.
