The time range is its widest yet: 1935 to 1966.
Three very different French noir icons are featured...
--Jean Gabin, with three rare films from the mid-1950s, including two with his favorite director Gilles Grangier.
--Jeanne Moreau, in her French noir phase prior to international stardom, with three films: one with Gabin, and two on a special closing night double-bill (Monday, November 6) where we showcase her talents as a "man-eater."
--Eddie Constantine, returning from an oblivion as deep as his star was bright in the 50s and 60s, when his character Lemmy Caution paved the way for James Bond and kept the one-time opera singer in the chips with good-natured Gallic send-ups of American noir--and, as we will see in our second feature...he can actually act!!
Plus so much more it just can't fit in this space. Familiar names (Arletty, Charles Boyer, Lino Ventura) in rare films. An introduction to the original face of 30s French noir--the inimitable, unlikely leading man Harry Baur. A tribute to the noir roots of Claude Chabrol, featuring two of his early films, both featuring the sexy, enigmatic Bernadette Lafont. A nod to past festival faves Robert Hossein and Bernard Blier.
Our thanks to Bertrand Tavernier for leading the way with his terrific segment on Eddie Constantine in his magisterial documentary A JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH FILM. (BTW, three free copies of the documentary--coming out on DVD with English subtitles later this fall--will be given away at the festival.)
Plus many more of the usual goodies/swag/etc. that are now firmly part of the cozy but clamorous festivities that have become synonymous with THE FRENCH HAD A NAME FOR IT.
