The last of the "exotic noir" sub-genre in France, originally shot in 1939, reworked after the fall of Paris with Pierre Renoir re-doing von Stroheim's role and released in 1942 that way, with the original version surfacing only after the end of the WWII.
We screened this on closing night last year for FRENCH 3, accompanied by another Jean Delannoy film, the unique LES JEUX SONT FAITS (1947). Gratifyingly, it all went over quite well.
