When I met Abraham Polonsky at the Pacific Film Archives in Berkeley, about 25 years ago, at a screening of Force of Evil, I told him how I and two friends happened upon the film at a neighborhood theater in Paris in the summer of 1970. We felt the mood of the film in a special way, I told him, because we had just turned in our rental car and, although we'd driven all over Europe with the cable disconnected (the rental price was largely calculated by the mileage recorded on the odometer), after sitting what for seemed forever in the lounge of the car rental office -- nervously wondering if we'd get caught and pay an outrageous fine -- we got away with it. Polonsky chuckled and congratulated me.
