Now I can say it's definitely a noir in both story and staging, and it's a very good one. It will easily pass Don's test instrument.
Melville is such a good noir director! He knows how to stage the scenes. His pacing is excellent, creating lots of tension and suspense.
Juliette Greco plays a nun named Thérèse at first, but she leaves the convent in Cannes when her parents are killed in an auto accident. She leaves in order to care for her 16-year old sister Denise (Irene Galter) in Nice where they have a stationary store. A womanizer and rogue named Max (Philippe Lemaire) is the other main character.
