Richard, let me get this straight. You simply can't abide a film that hurls you "into the black abyss of depression...a bottomless pit, cold and dank, with no light, no way out?" Sounds like a classical definition of film noir to me! In fact, perhaps one of the most cogent and emotionally compelling descriptions of what makes noir so appealing in the first place. And why (just askin") does witnessing someone's (anyone's) success in a completely subjective arena such as filmmaking depress you? I think you appreciate Mr. Wood more than you realize.
