Just months before she would have been more accessible to home video collectors, the lovely Kristine Miller has passed away. A protegée of Hal Wallis, Ms. Miller was a lissome beauty but didn't really have the chops to be a front-line star...she's remembered by noir fans for three roles: as the sister of murder victim Arthur Kennedy in TOO LATE FOR TEARS, where she endures the woozy wooing of Don DeFore; as the icy socialite in I WALK ALONE, a film Miller claimed was supposed to be her showcase in the songbird role eventually played by Lizabeth Scott; and as the brittle, b*itchy wife whose corpse makes life exceedingly difficult for Zachary Scott in SHADOW ON THE WALL.
Miller moved into westerns in the 50s and eventually retired after marrying a radio executive. Obituaries listed her age at death as 90, which meant that Wallis had shaved four years off her age during her contract days.
"Miss Palmer, honey" (as DeFore's rather oddball avenger character calls her in TOO LATE FOR TEARS) was a lovely young woman, and that is easier to see in the restored version of the film thanks to the auspices of the FNF.
