Thanks, Richard. It's a shame Mitchum didn't get a chance to play Marlowe earlier--I've often wondered what it would have been like if THE LITTLE SISTER had been adapted for him in the mid-to-late 50s.
This film can, I think, be favorably paired with MAIGRET TEND UN PIEGE (Maigret Sets A Trap), Jean Gabin's debut as Simenon's singular polceman. In both films we get that world-weariness possible only when the intersection of role and star accentuates such a quality. Both Mitchum and Gabin are more than equal to the task.
